Motherhood has many rewards, and a few drawbacks. One of these is the effects it may have on the body. Busy mommies may not have time for the gym or for the healthiest diet. The upshot of all this may be sagging of areas such as the breasts and tummy.
We have devoted this website as a solution for the problems arising from pregnancy, nursing and the physical toll of motherhood. At plastic surgery clinics this solution is known as the Mommy Makeover. This usually refers to treating the breasts and tummy, but mommies may also desire other procedures through three plastic surgery procedures.
The procedures involved in a Mommy Makeover
Breasts have multiple functions: the most obvious are nursing and physical attraction. Once the breasts have served the former function, mommies often turn their attention to the latter. The complaint of our clients is usually twofold: the breasts have become empty and they droop. Two procedures, often combined, can address these problems.
Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
A mommy lift restores the breasts by tightening them, repositioning the sagging nipples, and giving an improved shape and firmness. The “lollipop” procedure is most frequently used at the Breast Augmentation Clinic. This name refers to the resulting scar which is shaped like a lollipop, running vertically up from the centre of the breast to the areola which it then circles. A lift is indicated when the nipple falls so much that it is below the inframammary fold (the crease under the breast).
Breast enlargement is indicated when the empty breast can simply be filled, or as an adjunct to mastopexy in breasts that have both sagged and lost volume. Most patients often get the most benefit more from using gel implants (though saline are available, of course). There are several types of cohesive gel implants, including the well known form stable 410 anatomic implant from Natrelle that is often used.
The second area often affected by pregnancy is the abdomen. The tummy is stretched, weight changes occur, and only the lucky few find their tummies tighten again after the baby arrives. A Tummy tuck is more than a simple tuck. It involves removal of the loose skin and any stretch marks it contains, internal sculpting sutures, repairing separated muscles, removing fat excess, and restoring the abdominal area as a whole. The procedure requires an incision across the lower abdomen, where it can be hidden by clothing, and a small scar around the navel. Scars from Caesarian sections or other abdominal procedures are often removed.
Mommies may be candidates for all sorts of other procedures, from Botox injections to maintain a youthful look, liposuction to reduce bulges that used not to be there, lifts of various sorts, and microdermabrasion with high quality skin care to keep the skin healthy and glowing.
A Word About Risks
Surgery, like everyday life, involves the taking of risk. In cosmetic surgery, as in everyday life, very serious risks are rare, and more common problems are usually readily taken care of.
The risks of surgery generally include infection, bleeding, healing problems, numbness, fluid collection and adverse scars. Because cosmetic surgery usually involves two sides, there can be asymmetry. Risks of breast augmentation include interference of implants with cancer detection (please note that they do not cause cancer), and capsular contracture, or firmness. With both mastopexy and augmentation, alteration of nipple sensation may occur. Mastopexy may interfere with the ability to breast feed. Pregnancy may adversely affect the results of a Mommy Makeover.
